Blocks

Blocks is a project that explores the potential of the age old process of slip casting.

With this process a form is created by pouring a liquid clay into a plaster mould. The liquid clay, or slip, then begins to form a skin on the inside wall of the mould. Once this wall thickness is great enough the excess slip is poured out and the hollow form remains

In this project the experimentation revolves around pushing the boundaries of modularity of the plaster moulds, and in seeing how limitless this approach can be in discovering new and unexpected forms.

The initial design of this project beginning with a single form, a water pitcher, this allowed for the inclusion of a spout, a base, and decorative details of linear and horizontal fins.

By splitting this form into 11 plaster moulds it allowed an exploration of what seemed like dozens of forms. Ranging from bowls, vases and pitchers.

On a deeper exploration for the Melbourne exhibition “Preliminary Structures”, what was later realised was the use of all 7 faces of each plaster mould allowed for an even further exploration that felt infinite. The Idea that the designed face of the plaster mould was not necessary needed to be used was fascinating and was possibly the most exciting stage of this project.
